What to Know About Trump’s Departure From Washington

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP on Wednesday morning is expected to skip President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration and depart the White House to board a flight to Palm Beach, Florida.

He is scheduled to arrive at his Mar-a-Lago resort by the time Biden is being sworn in at around noon, according to CNN

Trump has asked for a “major send-off” with supporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, according to CNN. The early morning ceremony includes a color guard, military band, a 21-gun salute, and a red carpet, the news outlet reports.

While it is typical for an outgoing president to hold an event at the site, Trump has ignored many of the farewell traditions of former administrations. On Tuesday, he released a video farewell address instead of the typically live, prime-time address is done by past presidents.

Trump in the video touted heightened border security, tough action on China, and “the greatest economy in the history of the world,” acknowledging the economic damage done by the pandemic only to note that his administration “launched the fastest economic recovery our country has ever seen.” He skirted over topics like his impeachments and the U.S. coronavirus death toll.

Throughout the pandemic, the president ignored coronavirus mitigation measures and invited large, unmasked crowds to his rallies. It’s unclear how big a crowd he will have on Wednesday morning.

Vice President Mike Pence will not appear at Trump’s farewell and is instead scheduled to attend Biden’s ceremony.
